Anne Bonny and Mary Read were female pirates of some repute. They hung round with ‘Calico’ Jack Rackham and were then sentenced to be hanged. When Rackham’s ship was attached all the men ran away and hid below decks, leaving the two women to fight on their own. When the were all captured Anne remarked to Rackham “Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hang’d like a dog.” This design is base on an illustration from A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates by Captain Charles Johnson first published in 1724. The depiction might be a little fanciful since both Read and Bonny managed to remain on a pirate ship unmolested by passing themselves off as men.
